London, 10 September 2015 – Maria Sharapova is one of the most famous female tennis players in the world and is currently ranked second by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). Described by the legendary John McEnroe as one of the best players in the game, Sharapova’s career has been blighted by injury, but she has nonetheless been ranked as world number one on five separate occasions. She is also one of only 10 women to hold the Career Grand Slam – and the only Russian to achieve this.
CharityStars, Britain’s leading online charity marketplace, has a tennis racket available to the highest bidder that has been used and signed by the famous Russian tennis star. The racket – manufactured by Head, Sharapova’s racket supplier, was used by the Russian ace in the United States (where she has lived since 1994) and is signed by her on the handle, with photographs to document its authenticity.
Sharapova signed rackets very rarely become available, so this is a unique opportunity to own something extremely personal to arguably the best female tennis player of the current era.
Proceeds from this auction will support the charity Friends of Shaun, which supports Sean Hadfield, a man of 24 who, because of a car accident at the age of nine, sustained a total and irreversible injury to his spine and spinal cord that left him to completely immobile and needing permanent support from a ventilation machine. The goal is to help Sean in his difficult journey and to offer as many opportunities as possible for a peaceful, happy life with all the care and support he needs.
