Rafael Nadal inevitably lifted his 9th Roland Garros title and in doing so tied with Pete Sampras on 14 Grand Slams as the joint second best player ever to win the game. Novak Djokovic had Nadal fans sweating early on as he took the first set 6-3 with a break of serve. But Rafa came roaring back in the second set to break Djokovic at 6-5 with an emphatic forehand winner. The momentum shifted from there on in as Nadal began to dictate everything and bossed a below par Djokovic. Nadal went up 3-0 and the body language changed, there was going to be only one winner. In the end Rafa ran out an easy winner to lift his 9th title at Roland Garros.
Both players will head to the grass courts in the next few days as they attempt to make the transition to grass. Nadal is top seed in Halle, Germany whereas Djokovic will head to London to practice ahead of Wimbledon. Nadal must now be a strong candidate to win Wimbledon once again a feat he last accomplished four years ago. If he is fit and can sustain his game through the early rounds with green slippy grass then Nadal must be the favourite to win.
Ofcourse Murray, Djokovic and Federer will have something to say about that.
