Ilkley Trophy report – 21.06.19
Friday, 21 June, saw the doubles semi-finals and singles quarter finals of the 2019 Ilkley Trophy, an LTA event.
The Australian pairing of Ellen Perez and Arina Rodinova, seeded third, were first up on centre court and took 1hr 24 minutes to see off the reigning Ilkley champions, Asia Muhammad and Maria Sanchez (USA, #2 seeds) 6-2, 6-7, 10-7.
Joining them in the final tomorrow is Beatriz Haddad Maiaand Luisa Stefani (Bra) who beat the #4 seeds Anna Blinkova (Rus) and Shuai Peng (Chn) 7-6,6-3.
Tomorrow’s men’s doubles final sees the two top seeds compete for the 2019 title. Santiago Gonzalez (Mex) andAisam-Ul-Haq Quereshi (Pak), seeded #1, were taken to a tie break by Marius Copil (Rou) and Ugo Humbert (Fra) 6-0,4-6, 10-4. They will face two previous Ilkley doubles champions, teaming up for the first time, Marcus Daniell(Nzl) and Leander Paes (Ind) who defeated Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (Ind) and Purav Raja (Ind) 3-6, 6-7.
Timea Babos (Hun) took three sets to defeat BrazilianBeatriz Haddad Maia 6-7, 6-4, 4-6. Tomorrow she will faceBibiane Schoofs (Ned) who also took a three set route to the semi-finals against the #3 seed Anna Blinkova (Rus) 6-4, 6-7, 4-6.
2018 women’s Ilkley champion Tereza Smitkova (Cze) won’t be retaining her title following a loss to Monica Niculescu (Rou) 6-4, 6-3. The final semi-final place goes toJana Cepelova (Svk) who defeated Veronica Cepede Royg(Par) 6-4, 7-6.
The men’s singles quarter finals saw the top seed, Ugo Humbert (Fra), go out in 1hr 14 mins to Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 6-4, 6-3. Number 10 seed Kamil Majchrzak (Pol) defeated the #13, Antoine Hoang (Fra) 3-6, 7-5, 4-6. Japan’sGo Soeda wasted little time dispatching #6 seed Marcel Granollers (Esp) 5-7, 4-6 with the final semi-final place going to Dennis Novak (Aut), the #9 seed, who won out in the last match of the day against Lukas Rosol (Cze) 7-6, 3-6, 4-6.
