It was by no means vintage Novak Djokovic in Montreal but the winningest man in tennis at the moment has just gone and won his 5th Masters Series event of the year and his 9th tournament victory. Djokovic defeated Mardy Fish 6-2 3-6 6-4 in 2 and a half hours in the extreme humidity on the Canadian summer. Early on it looked like Fish may have had the secret to beating Djokovic as he brought up several break points in the Serb’s first three service games but was unable to convert. The Serb showed Fish what to do with break point opportunities and ran away with the first set. The second set followed a similar pattern but it was Fish who broke at 2-2 and went on to take the set 6-3.
Djokovic didnt appear to be on his A game for large parts of the final today. Mardy Fish was able to move him around and hustle him at the net with great transition ground strokes. It appeared that early in the 3rd the final and momentum had swung Fish’ way but when the going got tough Djokovic played the bigger points better and was that steely resolve that saw him win. Red Hot Favourite for US Open in September, Djokovic and Fish head to Cincinatti for the final Masters event before Flushing.
