Here come the girls….

all eyes on Caro

For the time of year there has been plenty of tennis headlines to keep us tennis istas busy! In the last 7 days we have seen Roger Federer play in his 900 tour level match and win his 64th tournament in Stockholm to pass Pete Sampras’ record. Roger didnt have it all his own way though, he was a set and 2-0 down against compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka Anne Keothavong also made the semis in Luxemburg however lost tamely to Italian Roberta Vinci. The 27 year hiatus for a British woman to make a tour level final continues. Laura Robson continues her progress towards the higher echelons of the women’s game as she last week broke into the Top 200 for the very first time, surely it must be a goal to be inside the Top 100 before the close of 2011.

Thomas Muster has decided against his better judgement that he wants to make a fulltime

comeback to the Mens ATP tour, the Austrian clay court specialist who won 40 career titles on clay was granted a first round wildcard to the Austrian Open in Vienna. He succumbed to his opponent fellow Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer in 2 sets. Despite the set back Muster assured us that he would be playing in 20-25 events on the main tour next year. Good for him we say!

And finally, as the ladies WTA season draws to a close, the top girls have one remaining tournament to negotiate, the end of season WTA Championships in Doha Qatar. The top 8 ladies in the world battle in three round robin matches before the top two in each group progress to the semi finals and finals of this prestigious event. All eyes seem to be on Great Dane Carolina Wozniacki, the 2o year old world number one is in the form of her life and the bookies tip to lift the title won by Serena Williams in 2009. In her opening group match she came through against ( best player never to win a major) Elena Dementieva 6-1 6-1 and faces French Open finalists Schiavone and Stosur in her remaining group games.

The second group sees Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva, Jankovic, Clijsters and Azarenka do battle for a place in the semi finals. Flakey serbian JJ  ( Jankovic) was demolished by Belorussian Victoria Azarenka 6-3 6-0. Clijsters will also fancy her chances of progressing to the semis despite her having not played since her US Open final. We predict a Clijsters vs Wozniacki final!
