It was possibly the greatest tale of the underdog ever. World Number 100, Lukas Rosol beats the King of Clay Rafa Nadal in a second round late night encounter on Centre Court. 5 sets of wham bam tennis, in the greatest sporting theatre of them all. I love Nadal I really do but Rosol showed us how to beat him. Flat and hard to the corners, take away his time. Who could have predicted that?
Nadal took the first in a tight tight tiebreak only for the Czech to roar back and take the second. He went a break up in the third and held on to lead two sets to one. Rafa then broke at 2-2 and held on for the forth. Meanwhile the Centre Court roof closed which ramped up the pressure and tension on both sides, crowd were absolutely loving.
On the resumption of play some 40 minutes later, Rosol broke first game and held. Everybody expected him to buckle under the pressure, but he didnt blink. He served bombs and came up with massive groundstrokes every time. At 5-4, he stepped up for what would be the final time, he served an ace and quickly got out to 40-15. He clinched victory with and dropped to his knees not really coming to terms with what he had just done. Victory over World Number 2 and a place in round 3. Andy Murray will be loving this!
