Swiss Open & Valencia Open Previews

valencia Swiss Open & Valencia Open PreviewsThe end of season European Indoor Tennis swing takes us to two very different locations and two very different tournaments. The first is the Swiss Open in the quaint Alpine city of Basel. Its also better known for being Roger Federer’s home town. This ATP 500 Event seems to have attracted most of the big names of the game, Djokovic, Murray and of course Federer to play but also has guys like Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick. The other event this year is in Valencia, brainchild of Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Ferrer takes place in the most spectacular tennis arena in the world, the Agora Building must be seen to be believed. The lineup features predominantly Hispanic players with David Ferrer, Jo Willie Tsonga, Almagro, Del Po and Feli Lopez to name but a few.

A few players are battling it out for the final spots in the race to London and the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the 02 Arena. Tsonga, Fish, Del Po, Almagro and Tipsy all no doubt harbour outside hopes of making the 8 man field. So no doubt the action will be fast and furious and set the stage nicely for the Paris Masters and London End of Season Events!

Where’s Rafa?Amidst all this frantic activity to qualify for London and accumulate as many points as possible, there is one player we have failed to mention. I scanned the entry list at both Basel AND Valencia but guess what no Rafael Nadal. Turns out Rafa is training hard in preparation for the Paris Masters and the Davis Cup Final against Argentina in December. The photo below shows Rafa training with his uncle but not Toni! This is uncle Miguel Angel Nadal, ex Barcelona and Spanish footballer who joined his nephew for a few training sessions on the sun kissed island of Majorca.
