So successful have I been at predicting the women’s results that the BBC have hired me as future predictor for the WTA!! Ok a tad ironic I know but I can remember an event with so many shocks. I hope to look briefly at each of the quarterfinals in turn. The predictions must get easier from here on in!
Serena vs Azarenka She has been my form player of the tournament thus far, the Belorussian played very well to come from a set and a break down against Zvonny to win 4-6 6-4 6-0. Serena is very much at the peak of her powers and I can see her teaching Azarenka a tennis lesson. Serena to progress
Li vs Venus I think this result is a lot less clear cut than Serena’s match. Venus has never won in Melbourne and her form has been patchy especially dropping the first set against Schiavone. Na Li is similar to Clijsters she only plays direct, she hits hard from side to side. I think she could hit through Venus for a set but Venus should be able to come back and make it an all William’s semi!
Henin vs Petrova I suppose the tennis romantics would love to see Henin do a Clijsters and clinch a grandslam with her only returned to the game a matter of weeks previous. Petrova like, Na Li, hits hard and flat from corner to corner. In her previous match against Kleybanova, Henin did struggle against her power but was able to hang on. I see a similar result happening. I think Justine will win, not straightforward, maybe in three, but a win nonetheless!
Zheng vs Kirilenko Another Chinese in the quarters! Where are they coming from? I think Maria Sharapova will be sitting in Florida rueing this missed opportunity! Having not seen Zheng play much I have no idea the result of this one. She did manage to beat Alona Bondarenko despite being unseeded and she has also made the SW19 semis before! At least we are guaranteed an unseeded player in the semis! Always makes for some excitement!
